United Nations Security Council: 1954

About the Committee:

The year is 1954. Following the end of World War II, the world seems primed to grow into an ever-increasing globalized society. However, change does not come without consequence. Throughout this period of connectedness and globalization, growing pains of conflict and war emerged on the Earth. In “God, Gold, and Guerilla Warfare: United Nations Security Council, 1954”, delegates will delve deep into two specific conflicts that emerged during this period of time. Delegates will have to face the consequences of colonization in the Algerian War, as long established colonies for global superpowers become more and more determined to achieve independence and sovereignty. Delegates must also find ways to navigate through divisive internal quarrels in La Violencia, as Cold War era tensions threaten to rip countries apart. The United Nations Security Council is charged with ensuring international peace and security: will you be able to uphold this responsibility, or will chaos and turmoil be victorious?

A LETTER FROM THE DaiS:

Dear delegates,

My name is Jesse, and I’m super excited to be one of your co-directors for God, Gold, and Guerilla Warfare: United Nations Security Council, 1954! I am a sophomore in the College of Engineering majoring in Environmental Engineering. Outside of MUNUM, I am also a member of Michigan Club Swimming and blueMUN, Michigan’s competitive model UN team. Outside of school, I enjoy playing spikeball, swimming, and spending time outdoors. Model UN has given me an opportunity to enhance my debate and public speaking skill and expose myself to topical global issues, all while having fun. I hope you all come out of this UNSC committee learning something new, opening up your worldview, and most importantly having a good time.

My name is Naman and I am the other co-director of the United Nations Security Council for MUNUM XXXVII. I am so excited to be co-leading this committee and diving deep into this rare topic. I am a sophomore studying computer science and this will be my second year at MUNUM. Outside of school, I enjoy playing tennis, chess, and trying different restaurants here in Ann Arbor. Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about MUNUM, our committee or topic or about the university as a whole.

Our committee will focus on the complex situations of the wars in Algeria and Columbia, in addition to the unique powers of the United Nations Security Council. We hope you have a great time at MUNUM XXXVII, and please reach out if you have any questions regarding our committee, MUNUM, or the university at large!

Sincerely,

Naman and Jesse
