Legal Committee (LEGAL)
About the Committee:
In LEGAL, delegates will be debating two topics: Prevention and Repression of Piracy and Armed Robbery at Sea and Enforcing the Individual Right to Privacy in Online Spaces. Topic A, Prevention and Repression of Piracy and Armed Robbery at Sea, will address issues such as foreign exploitation, intelligence sharing, and the causes and solutions of piracy and armed robbery globally. Both coastal and landlocked countries, regardless of their development status, rely on pirated maritime trade routes that have been compromised by piracy and armed robbery. The goal of debate in this committee will be to enhance existing legal frameworks and develop new ones to tackle both centralized and decentralized pirating and armed robbery schemes. In Topic B, the Individual Right to Privacy in Online Spaces, delegates will debate how to enforce current privacy rights, safeguard personal data, and uphold the rights of citizens and non-citizens in this digital age. The goal of debate is to examine how countries can better protect the individual privacy rights of their citizens while considering the varied levels of technological advancements across different regions.

A LETTER FROM THE DaiS:
Hello Delegates,
My name is Alden Delgado, and I am so excited to be your director for the Legal Committee this year! I am currently a sophomore studying Political Science in the College of Literature, Science, and Arts at the University of Michigan. Outside of MUNUM, I’m a member of the University’s competitive Model UN team, and I sing with the Umich DJs, one of the a cappella groups here on campus. Outside of school, I enjoy hiking, cooking, and swimming, and I’m a huge fan of the Legend of Zelda and Pokemon series. I hope that all of you are as excited for MUNUM XXXVIII as I am, and I can’t wait for the start of the committee! Feel free to email me with any questions that you may have!
My name is Emerson Hoyle, I am excited to be an assistant director of Legal this year! I am a sophomore in the Residential College and Literature, Science and Arts College here at the University of Michigan studying French on a pre-public policy route. Outside of MUNUM, I am a member of the University's competitive Model UN and Greek life here on campus. Outside of school, I am an avid reader, painter, baker, and hiker. I adore all forms of baking but particularly the art (and torture) of making sourdough bread. I am immensely excited for MUNUM XXXVIII, feel free to email me with any questions that you may have, conference-related or not!
