Legal Committee (LEGAL)

About the Committee:

In LEGAL, delegates will debate two pressing issues: the ICC’s Role in Prosecuting Crimes Against Protestors in Authoritarian States and the Legality of Targeted Sanctions in Response to Human Rights Violations. Topic A addresses how the ICC can pursue justice in cases of state-sponsored violence against protesters, especially in non-signatory states. Delegates will explore questions of jurisdiction, sovereignty, and the legal definition of crimes against humanity. Topic B focuses on the use of targeted sanctions, such as travel bans and asset freezes, as a tool for enforcing human rights. Debate will center on their legality under international law, effectiveness, and unintended humanitarian consequences. The goal of this committee is to examine how legal frameworks can adapt to uphold justice and protect human rights in a complex international landscape.

A LETTER FROM THE DaiS:

Hello Delegates,

My name is Alessandra (Ally) Alkema, and I am excited to be one of your co-directors for the Legal Committee this year! I am currently a sophomore studying neuroscience and Japanese in the College of Literature, Science, and Arts at the University of Michigan. I am also a part of many clubs here on campus, including the learning community of Lloyd Scholars of Writing and the Arts, where I live and learn about many forms of art and music. I am also interested in the Red Cross Club, the Pre-Med Club, and the American Heart Association at the university (all medicine!). Outside of school, I enjoy exploring coffee shops, playing the flute and piccolo, painting, writing, and making jewelry. I hope everyone is excited for MUNUM XXXIX this year. My name is Christine Kim, and I am so excited to be your co-director for Legal! I am a sophomore studying neuroscience at the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and Arts. Outside of school, I am either eating, sleeping, or cleaning. I am an avid perfume connoisseur, a shopaholic, and a collector of weighted stuffed animals. If you don’t find me at the mall, I’m probably golfing, skiing, sailing, or shooting (even though I despise nature).
