Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

About the Committee:

In the ECOSOC, delegates will be debating two topics: Mitigating Brain Drain and Countering Organized Crime. Topic A, Mitigating Brain Drain, will focus on the opportunity generation gap between nations, the disparity that results from a lack of education and job placements, and the root that causes talented minds to leave their home countries in favor of more developed nations. The goals of debate in this committee will be to approach human capital drifts from an economic and social perspective to understand the positives and negatives that countries experience as a result of these movements and migrations. Topic B, Countering Organized Crime, will allow delegates to debate how to deter crime groups, government corruption, and the safety of ordinary citizens from such groups. Both developed and developing nations play crucial roles in the regulation and deterrence of organized crime groups, and it will be important to recognize the nuances of government relations with such groups and how they vary from nation to nation. The goal of debate will be to examine modes for co-operating and compromising with organized crime groups across nations while examining the relationships that they have with communities and governments as a whole.

TOPIC A: Mitigating Brain Drain

TOPIC B:  Countering Organized Crime

A LETTER FROM THE DaiS:

Hello Delegates!

Welcome to the Economic and Social Council for Model United Nations at the University of Michigan!

My name is Ainsley Barrett, and I am so excited to be a Co-Director for ECOSOC this year! Mia and I are really proud of the topics that we came up with, and we can’t wait to see the debate come to life in January. This is my second year being involved with MUNUM as a staffer, and my sixth year of doing Model United Nation. I am a sophomore majoring in Economics. Outside of studying and MUNUM, I am involved with Michigan Political Consulting, Central Student Government, Pi Beta Phi, and Enactus Consulting group. I also love to play tennis, read, crochet, run, and hang out with my amazing friends.

My name is Mia Valiotis, and I can’t wait to meet everyone in January. We are very excited to get this committee started. I have been involved with MUNUM for two years, once as a staffer and this year as Co-Director for the ECOSOC. I am a sophomore in the college of Literature, Science, and the Arts with an interest in pursuing public policy on the pre-law track. When I’m not studying or working on MUNUM, I am part of the Michigan Foreign Policy Council, The Michigan Daily, and Kappa Alpha Pi Pre-Law Fraternity.

We are so excited to share our vision for this committee with you and to see debate in January. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via email:
