Welcoming Words from Directors Fan and Lee:

Hello Delegates,

On behalf of the DISEC staff, we would like to welcome you all to MUNUM XXXI!

My name is Michelle Fan, and I am one of the co-directors for DISEC for this conference. I am a sophomore in the Ross School of Business here at the University of Michigan. I grew up in Vernon Hills, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. There, I attended Adlai E. Stevenson High School and participated in MUN for three years, both attending and hosting conferences. This is my second year as a part of MUNUM. I worked with the Historical General Assembly committee last year as a rapporteur.

My name is Sophie Lee, your other co-director. I’m a junior in the International Studies program at the University of Michigan, specializing in political economy and development. I’m originally from Seoul, South Korea, but I spent most of my years in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I attended the American International School of Jeddah (AISJ), and started participating in the MUN program in middle school. I was a delegate for about four years and served as a head chair of different committees for three years. This is my third year on staff at MUNUM, and I have spent the last two years as a rapporteur and assistant director of SPECPOL.

DISEC is the first committee of the United Nations General Assembly, and revolves around issues about disarmament and international security, such as the two topics our committee is focusing on this year: the international security implications of social media and illicit trade of
small arms and light weapons (SALW). Recently, aspects of social media and the illicit trade of SALW have both shown to be detriments to global peace and security. Thus, we hope all delegates will be active participants to allow us, as a committee, to develop comprehensive solutions, and to have all voices heard. We expect everyone to have completed thorough research about the topics at hand, as well as on your nations’ stances to stay on policy.

We hope this conference will be a fun and valuable experience for you all! If you have any questions about the conference or committee, please feel free to reach out to either of us via email.

Best regards,

Michelle Fan
