Founded in 1987, Model United Nations at the University of Michigan (MUNUM) is a Model U.N. conference dedicated to providing high school students a space to engage with and find solutions to pressing international issues. Usually held on the picturesque campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, this conference is still staffed by a team of dedicated undergraduate students from diverse fields of study. We are excited to welcome outstanding high school delegates from around the country for a weekend of passionate debate.

Over the course of four days, students work together to analyze global issues and propose thoughtful, creative, and innovative solutions, helping them learn more about geostrategy, diplomacy, compromise, and problem-solving. MUNUM’s topics range from national and international security, political and economic development, sustainability and environmentalism, human rights and law, and international partnership. By engaging in a vast array of multi-layered challenges, delegates take away bolstered skills in empathy, teamwork, and communication.

MUNUM was originally designed as a purely United Nations simulation conference, with our committee pool consisting entirely of UN organs such as the General Assemblies, the Security Council, and the UN’s independent agencies. As the activity of Model UN has evolved, so to have our committee offerings. Delegates can choose to represent Haiti’s Untied Nations Ambassador debating whether former colonizers owe reparations to former colonies, a member of the World Cocoa Foundation considering forced labor in the chocolate industry, or a mobster in the infamous Chicago Outfit, among other offerings.

Building on our almost forty-year history, MUNUM continues to provide every delegate with the best experience possible. From our unique committees to our passionate staff, our conference strives to ensure all participants—delegates, staffers, and advisors alike—leave MUNUM with a better sense of the problems facing our world and a passion and belief that those problems can be solved.

MUNUM has a long-standing partnership with the United World Schools organization that allows everyone participating in the conference, delegates and staff, to contribute to the betterment of our global community. All funds raised at MUNUM XXXVI will go toward helping maintain our partner school in Gufa, Nepal. You can read more about our efforts here.
