The Great Rebellion of 1857
About the Committee:
Since the mid-1700s, the British East India Company has ruled in India, introducing unpopular social and economic reforms based upon British cultural ideas and political interests. With tensions between the British rule and the Indian people brewing for over a century, we find ourselves in February of 1857 with the stability of the nation hanging by a thread. Following the introduction of the controversial Enfield Rifle, relationships between Indian soldiers and their British Commanders have grown increasingly hostile. The air is thick with the possibility of mutiny.
A LETTER FROM THE DaiS:
Greetings Delegates,
Hello! My name is Emily, and I will be one of your co-directors for The Great Rebellion of 1857! I am a junior majoring in Chemical Engineering through the College of Engineering, and double minoring in International Engineering and Chemistry here at the University of Michigan. Outside of MUNUM, I work in a research lab using machine learning models to study cancer cell metabolism. In my spare time, I like to figure skate, read, crochet, and draw. Please feel free to reach out with any questions about the committee, the University of Michigan, engineering, or anything else!
Hello! My name is Advaith, and I will be your other co-director. It is my great pleasure to welcome you to The Great Rebellion of 1857. I am a junior studying Robotics at the College of Engineering and I’ve been part of MUNUM for 3 years now. I engage in research in the field of intelligent systems – giving robots the ability to see and reason about their surroundings to perform tasks intelligently. Apart from school, I love to work on project cars, stay active, and immerse myself in different cultures by cooking, reading, and watching movies. Though I am a Robotics student, I love being part of MUNUM as it broadens my perspective and teaches me things you don’t learn in an engineering classroom. I believe it is important for all students, no matter their background and interests, to be engaged in social advocacy, politics and justice. I encourage you to contact me as I would love to chat with you guys about MUNUM, UMich, Engineering or anything else!
Please don’t hesitate to contact us at kurtzem@umich.edu and advaithb@umich.edu. See you soon!
Best,
Advaith and Emily
