Joint Crisis: Russo-Japanese War

About the Committee:

Welcome to the Joint Crisis Committee, The Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905! It all started on a cold morning in the year 1904, the sound of cannons shattered the silence in the East, sending waves across the world. The stage was set as the ancient empire of Japan rose from the ground to challenge the mighty Russian empire. The Russo-Japanese War was not just a regular battle; it was a fight for dominance in the 20th century. The Russo-Japanese War, which took place from 1904 to 1905, was initiated by a fierce rivalry over the control of territories in East Asia, mainly Korea and Manchuria. Both empires had many imperial ambitions and wanted to expand their influence in the Eastern regions. Tensions got worse as negotiations failed and Japan made a surprise attack on the Russian fleet at Port Arthur. This conflict was the first time an Asian power attempted to defeat an Industrialized European power in war, reshaping global powers and setting the world for future geopolitical shifts. This guide will help you as you research and understand the history and origins of the committee and will serve as a useful tool in your preparation for the conference.

A LETTER FROM THE DaiS:

Hello Delegates!!

My name is Mayuka Kallakuri and I am one of the co-directors of JCC: Russo-Japanese War for MUNUM XXXVIII. I am a sophomore at the Ross School of Business studying Business Administration and UI/UX design through the School of Information. I have done Model UN all four years of high school, attended MUNUM twice as a delegate, and was a part of the staff for the first time last year in JCC: Angolan War! JCC is my favorite committee, especially the five-way JCC I did at NAIMUN in Washington D.C. about the Indonesian Revolution, and this is my third time in a JCC overall. I can’t wait for y’all to dig deep into this year’s topic because it is truly so interesting and intricate. Outside of MUNUM, I am a part of a business fraternity and a marketing club and I want to pursue a career in marketing or consulting post-graduation. In my free time, I love playing mini-golf, shopping, and trying new foods! I hope you guys are excited for MUNUM and I can’t wait to meet all of you in January. Please reach out if you have any questions whatsoever, can’t wait to dive into the Russo-Japanese War!

Hey, I am Carter Orlando and I am one of the co-directors of JCC: Russo-Japanese War for MUNUM XXXVIII. I am a Sophomore at the Ross School of Business studying Business Administration and Asian Language and Culture (Specifically Mandarin and Chinese Culture). I worked with MUNUM for the first time last year as staff for the JCC: Angolan War. I love JCC and I’m sure whether this is your first or one of many JCCs I'm sure you’ll love it too! The Russo-Japanese War is just a pivotal time in geopolitical history, technology, and the overall world, so there is something for everyone in this amazingly interesting time in history. When not in MUNUM I keep myself busy. I spin flag in the Michigan Marching Band and the Michigan Winter Ensemble, do marketing for the on-campus gaming studio, and intern at the university botanical gardens. Outside of these I also love to cook and dig my nose into a good book. I’m excited to see you all and hope you are pumped and ready for MUNUM. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me, I will always be here to help you. Excited for some JCC fun!

My name is Mahi Khandelwal, and I am the assistant Director for JCC: Russo-Japanese War for MUNUM XXXVIII. I can’t wait to see what you all have researched regarding this unique topic! I am a senior studying Business Administration with a minor in Education. I attended MUNUM twice as a delegate myself and this is my third year being a part of the staff! Last year was my second time running a JCC and I can confidently say it is my favorite committee. This year’s topic has some very interesting characters and arcs, so get ready to debate! Outside of MUNUM, I am also a part of a consulting club here on campus and plan on pursuing management consulting post-graduation. I am also part of a Bollywood fusion dance team where we compete against other teams around the country. In my free time, I love to go on runs as well as try all the different restaurants in Ann Arbor. MUNUM holds a special place in my heart, so I’m super excited to see you all in January! Please reach out to me with any questions you have, MUNUM-related or not!

Sincerely,
