Formula 1

About the Committee:

It is the summer of 1976. In the lush, shadowy forests of the Nürburgring, tensions arise as the German Grand Prix approaches. The Nürburgring, a circuit known for its immense challenge and danger, poses a great threat to the safety of the drivers. As race day looms closer, drivers begin to voice their concerns about the safety, outdated infrastructure, and extreme length of the track. The drivers and their teams must now weigh prestige, tradition, ambition, and commercial interests against the iron wall of the FIA and rising calls for a boycott. Should the race go on, or should caution prevail?

A decade later, the world had changed, but yet another storm brews—this time in South Africa. The Kyalami Grand Prix sits at a global center of controversy as apartheid isolates the nation both morally and diplomatically. A heated dispute between the drivers and the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) over the new Superlicense policy threatens to bring chaos to the grid. As many drivers see the new terms as an infringement of their autonomy and privacy, the talk of another boycott spreads quickly. Behind the scenes, tensions rise as contracts, careers, and the control of the sport hang in the balance of uncertainty.

A LETTER FROM THE DaiS:

Hello Delegates!

My name is Arunima Vasudev, and I’m super excited to be one of your co-directors for A Formula for Chaos: F1 Between 1976–1982. I am a sophomore in the College of Engineering here at the University of Michigan, studying Computer Science and Business. Outside of MUNUM, I am on a NASA spacecraft instrumentation research team where I work with machine learning models to remove unwanted noise from solar radio bursts. I am also a part of the Society of Women Engineers, VIPs, and Girls and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (GEECS). In my free time, I like to scrapbook, watch a good mystery movie, listen to music, and watch F1 (obviously). I hope that all of you are as excited to be a part of this committee as I am. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have!
