The Arrow War
About the Committee:
The year is 1856, fourteen years after the end of the First Opium War. Since the Treaty of Nanjing, a fragile and fraught peace has been set between the Qing government and the British empire, but tensions boil under the surface. Whispers run through the port of Canton. Some claim another war is imminent, while others trade rumors of a meeting between the Qing court and the officials from the British empire. The French and the Americans are involved too and will attend the meeting as well, others detail with urgency. What is for certain is that expansion of trade control remains of the British’s priorities, but the Qing court is determined to protect their sovereignty. As ships are boarded and sails are hoisted, delegates will soon meet. They are the ones who will determine the future of East and West diplomacy and trade…and set the course of war in its tracks.

A LETTER FROM THE DaiS:
Hello Delegates,
My name is Claudia Minetti, and I’m very excited to be one of your co-directors for Here We Go Again: The Arrow War, 1856-1860! This is my third year at MUNUM and I’m thrilled to join you all for MUNUM XXXVIII. A little bit more about me: I am currently a junior in the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan studying Public Policy with a minor in International Studies. Outside of MUNUM, I am also a reporter for The Michigan Daily. When I’m not doing schoolwork, I can be found reading, taking long walks, attending a musical event or guest lecture on campus, or hanging out with friends at coffee shops! I am so thrilled to meet all of you and make this the best conference ever! If you have any questions or concerns about the conference or otherwise, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
Hello Delegates!
